Reasons I'm going to give up TV.
I think my chances of giving up TV are extremely good because if I view TV as a form of entertainment then I find I am sadly most of the time literally un-entertained. I can sit in front of the TV watching a program that is considered popular or funny and rarely break out in laughter. I think it's such a habitual thing to sit there spending time being un-entertained and not think anything of it. I have begun to value my time and will focus it onto something I would consider a bit more meaningful than to settle for mediocre entertainment.
So, I need to substitute my TV viewing time for time spent being more productive. If you spend about 3 hours per day watching TV, isn't that the same as having a part time job? Except that watching TV doesn't earn you anything at all. So you could argue that watching TV is losing you a part time salary.
This argument may not apply to those with some financial freedom but for those that the opposite apply, I guess there can be little or no excuses than to simply give up TV in order to secure a little more wealth.
If you gave up TV and you didn't choose to work, just imagine instead what else you could be doing with your new found time. Acquiring a little new found boredom will also spur a bit of imagination and ingenuity. To experience a free-media lifestyle I think could lead to a healthier and more balanced mind. I think it's good to be in touch with the current affairs of the world but you simply don't need to be inundated with all that mostly negative information. It's just not necessary.
How about meditation, never tried it seriously before, using your time to meditate, just to be still, quiet and calm would be highly beneficial to the mind. I'll give you an insight into the news I read about today, war in Iraq and the soldiers their being devalued, global warming and our coming doom because of melting icecaps, deforestation, pollution, murders, kidnappings along with general tails of torture. It’s not a great way to start the day is it?. It's never put me in a positive frame of mind that's for sure. It's not going to help any of the fore mentioned if I'm glued to the TV for hours every day. Wouldn't it be more beneficial to the world if we all focused on getting rich and then choosing a cause that applies most to you and then making a real difference to the world. It should be noted that the world isn't broken, you didn't come here to fix it and you certainly didn't come here to save humanity. When was the last time you felt any positive feelings from watching the news.
Have you ever been doing something else and then interrupting a friend or family member watching TV? You'll find that whatever the type of mood the film is portraying and emanating will certainly rub off to a certain degree on its viewers. So by the end of the film the viewers’ mood can be negative, sad and angry with a general hollow lonely feeling.
Watching TV for some people leads to a poor and unbalanced diet. In some cases TV clearly has a priority over cooking higher quality meals. The times I've watched TV, I've needed to prepare a quick meal with less attention given to a healthy diet in order to watch a favorite show. I've eaten mostly unhealthy snacks while watching TV as the two seem to be dependant on one another. My favorite TV program isn't quite as enjoyed as much without my favorite snack and my favorite snack isn't quite as enjoyable with my favorite TV program.
Let's Look At Any Advantages of Watching TV.
To examine a different viewpoint, let’s look at some reasons why you should watch TV. If it's as a form of entertainment then I would always prefer time spent with my friends or family. I'd much rather experience at first hand the sense of humor of my friends than of a scripted imagined character on screen. Yes, TV is of course is a tool to present the worlds news and current affairs but there's also the internet and newspapers to keep up to date with.
Although newspapers are also there to social condition us to do this or that, act this way or buy this and that. Is TV a healthy form of education? I doubt there are many truly suitable children’s programs that aren't showing violence or destructive behavior.
So finally, the way I'm going to give up TV is simply not to switch it on, not to slip into previous habits and just allow things to happen on auto. I'm going to plan what I'm going to be doing instead of watching TV. I'm sure that up to a month may be needed to fully calculate any benefits or negative aspects on giving up TV. Its time now that I start my experiment.
