Middle Age
Middle-aged people can add years to their lives exercising but while adding one to four years may not sound like a lot to some people, exercising now will free you from all kinds of illnesses that can make it difficult for people to enjoy their later years.
Benefits of Exercise
Exercise has a whole host of benefits. Studies show it lowers blood pressure, reduces stress, reduces heart disease, lowers total cholesterol, raises good cholesterol, and reduces the weight gain so typical to older people.
Exercising also helps to keep blood running through the veins to prevent blood clots, strokes and some senility.
Exercise can ease depression, increases the feelings of general wellbeing. It can improve sleep patterns and even help arthritic pain. Regular exercise can strengthen the immune system and ward off colds and infections.
The problem is that most people simply choose to ignore all this evidence linking exercise to a longer and better quality life. It's similar to those vegetables that everybody knows it's good for you; yet many people still avoid it, giving up on its potential health benefits.
Don't just sit and wait for a pill to prevent illnesses or to save your life, start an exercise routine today. Get out and walk more. Fifteen, 20 or 30 minutes of walking each day is probably enough.
There is no magic formula for which type or how much aerobic exercise you should do. You can be the judge, and remember that any exercise is better than none.
The general rule is to do aerobic exercise three to four times a week. Start with just a few minutes, slowly increasing the duration to about 30 minutes and so on.
